‘The Match’ is back in 2022, and this time, the event is going all-in on the NFL quarterbacks.
In the past, The Match has featured established golfers that are either playing solo against another or are teamed up with an athlete. In 2022, it will be Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers teaming up against Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
This will be the third appearance in The Match for Brady, who has twice paired up with Phil Mickelson, and it will be the second appearance for Rodgers, who beat Brady and Mickelson in 2021 when he was teamed up with Bryson DeChambeau.
This battle of generational quarterbacks is sure to draw plenty of attention as fans watch the 2021 conference championship game signal-callers team up in an NFC vs AFC showdown on the links.
The teams will also have the capability to communicate directly with the broadcast commentators. In past years, the latter has proved a worthy addition, with PGA former world No. 1 Justin Thomas getting the better of a memorable exchange with TNT’s Charles Barkley, also in 2020.
Format of the match
The single-day tournament will feature matchplay between the pairings of Brady-Rodgers and Allen-Mahomes. They will play only 12 holes on the course in match play, and the pair that finishes with the lowest number of combined strokes wins the hole.
They will play in alternate-shot matchplay, which means that the partners will take turns hitting the same ball during the tournament. Whoever does not hit the best tee shot will take the second shot on the course.
Previous Winners:
Mickelson beat Woods in the first running of The Match and won the $9 million purse. A year and a half later, Woods teamed up with Peyton Manning to beat Mickelson and Brady. Mickelson had his revenge on Manning later in 2020 when he and Charles Barkley beat Manning and Stephen Curry.
In the two editions last year, Bryson DeChambeau and Rodgers beat Mickelson and Brady in July before Brooks Koepka beat DeChambeau in a one-on-one matchup in 2021.
